This is a beautifully restored National Cabinet Machinist Tool Case Model 034 manufactured sometime during WWII and still retains it's original labels on the front drawers as shown. Note: Gerstner owned National Cabinet and there are many similarities to the cases produced by them. These "cases" are like the "chests" except without the top till. Unlike the chest models, National Cabinet and Gerstner cases were constructed with 4 box joints, instead of just the 2 bottom box joints. They used very nice solid oak that is about 1/2 thick on the box sides and top.

The back panel on the case is made of oak veneer on board. This case has been fully restored with the following. Case Frame and Front Panel- stripped, sanded, stained (Golden Oak) and polyurethane coated, (Min Wax "warm gloss"). Rear veneer was replaced with quarter sawed oak veneer. This newer oak stained much darker than the original veneer as shown.

Note: Repairing the veneer was required as the underlying boards had split and lifted the nails holding them to the case. The old veneer had separated from the boards and tore off in sections. The panels were repaired and the new sheet of oak veneer was "clamp glued" in place. The now stabilized panel should last many years without any issues.

Cleaned all steel corners and hardware. Drawers - cleaned and waxed drawer fronts. Removed old glued paper velvet and replaced with new self-adhesive 1/16 thick black felt on all drawer bottoms. All the drawers slide freely in and out and show very little signs of wear. Drawers bottoms are hardboard and rear nailed similar to steel bottom drawers.

Possibly switched to hardboard because of steel shortages during the war. The 3/4 front panel has the original National Lock Company lock mechanism and a working National Lock Key. Interior has new black felt work surface. This beautifully restored National Cabinet Case is already 70 plus years old and is now proudly ready for many more years of active service.
